Who built this and why it looks the way it does
I spent a long time in large organisations...senior management roles at global companies, the kind of career that looks like success from the outside but that also, over time, made one thing increasingly clear.
Trading time for money, even at a senior level, is a finite and somewhat fragile arrangement. You are always one restructure, one health event, or one market shift away from discovering exactly how finite it really is.
The moment that crystallised this for me was not a restructure. It was a taxi ride going up a mountain road in Malaysia...a 1,200-foot sheer drop on one side, a haulage (‘Tonka Style’) truck going down the mountain on the wrong side round a 300degree bend, and a driver who appeared to find both entirely unremarkable.
The car bounced off the truck as we rounded the bend heading straight for the edge but we skidded sideways and headed back across towards a Buddha walking ‘thoughtfully’ in the middle of the road...just behind a sacred cow...with the quiet confidence of something that had never once worried about traffic.
Somehow...and I’ve no idea how...we managed to avoid them...screeching to a halt just past the Buddha...which was just as well as it’s absolutely ‘bad luck’ to injure kill a sacred cow or for that matter a Buddha.
Now when I say...‘bad luck’...think being stoned to death kind of ‘bad luck’...and to this day, I’m mildly scared of cows.
